2025 61st PLYC Regatta July 26 & 27

Celebrating Competition, Community & Camaraderie on the Water

A Weekend to Remember!

This year’s regatta brought excitement, teamwork, plenty of wind, and fun! Twenty-five boats competed across four fleets: Centerboard with the High DPN, Low DPN, MC, and the sailing school with 6 Club 420s and one Quest. The lake was full of action. We were thrilled to have 15 current and former instructors on the racecourse, showcasing their talent and dedication to sailing.

Saturday Highlights: Strong Winds & Stronger Support

Saturday delivered steady southerly winds, perfect for competitive racing. A few gusts led to capsizes throughout the day, but our chase boat crews — the Smart and Flatin Families, and Ryan Grindeland — responded quickly and kept all sailors safe. Big thanks to them and our race committee, led by Gary Ostbye, for setting and adjusting the course with expert precision.

Let’s not forget the legendary on-the-water lunches, once again a highlight for every crew!

Saturday Night Social: Food, Fun & Friendship

The yacht club hosted a lively social with more than 70 in attendance. Sailors proved they shine in the kitchen as much as on the water, bringing a wide variety of homemade dishes that were shared and enjoyed by all.

Despite the warm, humid weather, the atmosphere was full of laughter, conversation, and community spirit. Our sailing school students (around 20 of them!) joined in the festivities, playing cornhole and building friendships that will carry on long after the sails are down.

Sunday Racing: Shifty Winds, Tight Finishes

Sunday started off calm, delaying course setup, but once the wind arrived, it brought new challenges. Shifts and variability tested all fleets. The first race featured one of the tightest finishes we’ve seen in years, with several boats finishing just seconds apart.

Midway through Race 2, the wind pulled a surprise — a 90° shift mid-leg that turned a downwind reach into an upwind battle. Crews scrambled to adjust their sails, making for thrilling and unexpected moments on the course.

Celebrating Success

The weekend wrapped up with an awards ceremony at the yacht club, led by Commodore Tom Frei. Congratulations to all sailors and teams! Results and award winners are posted on the PLYC website.
